What “bad posture” actually means for your body
Posture isn’t just about looking confident in photos. It changes how your joints move, how your muscles work, and how much stress goes through your spine. The most common posture-driven problems we see:
- Forward head posture, head sitting in front of the shoulders, common from phone and computer use. Each inch forward adds about 10 pounds of effective weight on the neck.
- Rounded shoulders, chest tight, upper back weak, shoulders sitting too far forward.
- Anterior pelvic tilt, pelvis tipped forward, low back arched, glutes weak.
- Slumped sitting, low back rounded, mid back collapsed, head dropped forward.
- One-sided patterns, common from carrying a bag on one shoulder, sitting cross-legged the same way, sleeping on one side.
These patterns cause real problems: chronic neck and back pain, headaches, tech neck, jaw tension, breathing limitations, even digestive issues.
How we approach posture correction
You can’t “just stand up straight” your way out of a posture pattern that took years to build. The body has learned that pattern. Changing it requires three things:
1. Treat the dysfunction the bad posture caused. Joints that have been stuck in a position get adjusted. Muscles that have shortened get released through dry needling or soft-tissue work. We address what’s currently broken before we ask the body to do something new.
2. Strengthen what’s been turned off. Posture isn’t held by willpower, it’s held by muscles. The deep neck flexors, mid-back muscles, and glutes are usually weak in classic poor-posture patterns. Specific exercises rebuild them.
3. Change the daily input. If your workstation is set up wrong, no amount of in-office care will fix the pattern. We coach you through the specific changes that matter most for your situation.
What to expect at your first visit
- History. Your daily routine, your work setup, your sleeping position, your symptoms.
- Postural assessment. Standing, sitting, and movement screening to identify the specific patterns and where they’re causing problems.
- Treatment plan. Specific to your patterns. Some patients need primarily in-office work; others need primarily home-based changes. Most need both.
- First treatment. Adjustments and soft-tissue work as appropriate. Plus your first homework: 2 or 3 specific changes to start with.
Frequently asked questions
Is it too late to fix my posture?
Almost never. The body adapts to new patterns even after decades of old ones, it just takes consistency. Older patients sometimes plateau before achieving “perfect” posture, but meaningful improvement is achievable at any age.
How long until I see a difference?
Most patients see and feel changes within 6 to 8 visits. Full retraining of a posture pattern takes 3 to 6 months of consistent work, both in-office and at home.
Do I really need treatment, or can I just stretch?
Stretching helps. It’s not enough by itself for most established posture patterns. The joints, muscles, and movement habits that have been locked in for years usually need direct intervention to unlock, and then exercises to maintain the change.
Do you do ergonomic assessments?
We do informal ones, looking at how you describe your workstation, asking about your setup, and recommending specific changes. For a formal in-person ergonomic evaluation, we can refer you out.
