What acupuncture treats
Acupuncture works for a wider range of conditions than most people realize. The patients we see most often come in for:
- Chronic pain in the back, neck, knees, shoulders, and joints
- Headaches and migraines, especially tension-related and recurring ones
- Sleep problems, including trouble falling asleep and staying asleep
- Anxiety and stress that’s affecting daily life
- Digestive issues like IBS, indigestion, and chronic discomfort
- Fatigue and low energy that hasn’t responded to other treatment
- Allergies and sinus issues
- Chronic inflammation
The National Institutes of Health’s NCCIH maintains an evidence summary on acupuncture’s effectiveness across these conditions, and the research is strongest for chronic pain, headaches, and chemo-induced nausea. For the right patient, the results speak for themselves.
What to expect at your first visit
Acupuncture isn’t mysterious. Here’s what a first appointment actually looks like:
- History and consultation. We talk through what’s bringing you in, what you’ve already tried, your overall health, and what you’re hoping to get out of treatment.
- Exam. A short physical exam to identify the areas we’ll be working on and rule out anything that needs a different kind of care.
- Treatment. You lie down on the treatment table. We place 5 to 20 thin, sterile, single-use needles at specific points on the body. The insertion is usually barely felt. Some patients feel a tiny pinch.
- Rest. The needles stay in place for 15 to 20 minutes while you relax. Most people describe this as a deep, calming experience, similar to a long stretch or a warm bath.
- Removal and follow-up plan. We remove the needles, talk about how you felt, and recommend a treatment plan based on the condition we’re treating.
For chronic conditions, plan on 6 to 12 sessions to evaluate progress. Some patients feel changes after the first session, but the cumulative effect is what produces lasting results.
Why patients pick Becker for acupuncture
- Real clinical training. Dr. Becker is certified in acupuncture, with years of treating actual conditions. Sterile, single-use needles. No spa atmosphere required.
- Come in just for acupuncture if that’s what you need. Plenty of patients do, and that’s totally fine. If we think chiropractic or dry needling would speed your results, we’ll mention it. No pressure.
- Straight answers. If acupuncture isn’t the right fit for your issue, we’ll tell you and suggest what is.
Frequently asked questions
Does acupuncture hurt?
Almost never. The needles are much thinner than what you’d see at a doctor’s office for blood work or a vaccine. Most patients feel nothing during insertion. Some feel a tiny pinch. Once the needles are in, most people describe the experience as deeply relaxing.
How many sessions will I need?
For chronic conditions, plan on 6 to 12 sessions. Some patients feel improvement after the first visit, but the cumulative benefits build over a series. We’ll give you a specific recommendation after your initial exam.
Is acupuncture safe?
Yes, when performed by a trained practitioner using sterile, single-use needles. Side effects are rare and usually limited to minor bruising at the needle site or brief fatigue after the session. Serious side effects are very rare.
What’s the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?
They look similar and use similar tools, but the approach and goals are completely different. Acupuncture is rooted in traditional Chinese medicine and targets specific energy points across the body. Dry needling is a Western technique that targets tight muscle trigger points to release them. We have a full breakdown of the differences.
Can I combine acupuncture with chiropractic care?
Yes, and we often recommend it. Acupuncture and chiropractic work well together because they address overlapping issues from different angles. If you’re being seen for chronic pain, the combination is often more effective than either treatment alone.
How long is each session?
Acupuncture sessions run 15 to 20 minutes from needle insertion to removal. Plan on 30 minutes total at the office for your first visit (consultation + exam + treatment) and around 25 minutes for follow-up sessions.

I have been very pleased with Becker Chiro. Dane is always willing to listen to my needs and caring enough that you don’t feel rushed through. I would recommend Becker’s for anything chiropractic and my wife has experienced their acupuncture process, and it does wonders for her.
